Giannis Antetokounmpo: “Evan Mobley can become better than me”

NBA – The two-time Bucks MVP imagines a bright future for the young Cavaliers interior.

With only 8 points at 2/12 shooting, Evan Mobley delivered probably one of his worst games of the season against the Bucks. This did not prevent Giannis Antetokounmpo, who walked on the Cavaliers, to have very, very complimentary words towards the young interior.

The proof with his first statement: “He can become better than me.” Really? Better than a two-time MVP, who was also MVP of the 2021 Finals and Defender of the Year in 2020, before becoming a member of the 76 best players in NBA history?

“I don’t see why he couldn’t,” Giannis continued for the Plain Dealer. “In my sophomore season, I didn’t have those stats. He’s already ahead of me. It’s up to him. He has the qualities to become a great player: he is 6’3″, he moves very well, he shoots, he is smart. He watches videos of other players and that’s very good for a young player. If he’s serious, humble and keeps working hard, he can become a very great player.”

“It’s only a matter of time before he becomes one of the best interiors in the league”

The Greek promises a bright future for Mobley (14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds average this season) and the Cavaliers, who did well to bet on him.

“He draws inspiration from other players, as I did. But everyone is unique, has their own style. His future looks bright. He plays well, he gives his all, he does everything he can for his team, to win. He has the ability, he has the physique and he’s hungry, he wants to. So it’s only a matter of time before he really finds his game, before he has a great season and becomes one of the best interiors in the league.”

The comparison to Giannis Antetokounmpo comes up regularly when Mobley is mentioned. What does the latter look like in Milwaukee’s All-Star?

“His constant aggressiveness,” he answers, “He’s always in attack mode. He’s got a hell of a motor and uses his athleticism when needed. I think I can do the same and have the same impact. We have similar builds too. Giannis is a great player and I’m striving to be one too, but in my own way. I can learn from the bigger guys.”
